Snow White Review

Movie Review

Disney’s newest Movie Snow White hit cinemas on March 21, 2025 – so here is the review:

Story

A Classic Tale with a New Yet Familiar Twist – As old as time itself, Snow White follows the classic princess movie formula—kicking off with a grand musical number introducing us to the town and its people. However, in this version, the “Prince” isn’t actually a royal, but more of a Robin Hood-type figure, adding a bit more depth to his character compared to the original. Snow White helps him escape, which doesn’t make the Evil Queen happy, so she send her Huntsmen and the classic tale unfolds.

Performances

Rachel Zegler delivers a great performance as Snow White, capturing the charm and grace of the beloved princess and bringing a little Rebel twist while serving vocals.

Gal Gadot, on the other hand, brings a more subdued and somewhat emotionless take on the Evil Queen. Whether this was an intentional choice or just her acting style is up for debate, but she certainly doesn’t reach the heights of other Evil Queens like Lana Parrilla’s unforgettable portrayal in Once Upon a Time—though, to be fair, Parrilla had much more time to develop her character.

Music

As a musical, the film delivers solid performances, but only a couple of songs truly stand out.

• Waiting on a Wish serves as Snow White’s emotional “I Want” ballad.

• Whistle While You Work is a fun, nostalgic moment.

Other songs are pleasant but not particularly memorable, though Rachel Zegler’s vocal talent shines throughout. Unfortunately, Gal Gadot’s singing voice doesn’t quite fit the villainous grandeur of the Evil Queen.

Visuals & CGI Concerns

One of the most debated aspects of the film has been the CGI dwarves. Setting aside the controversy, their appearance leans into Polar Express territory, making them feel a bit uncanny. Hopefully, this doesn’t become a trend where characters who could easily be portrayed by human actors are replaced with CGI.

The Mirrors Face was true to the Original but at first I found it a little weird but got used to it, the Voice Performance of Patrick Page as Mirror was perfect tho.

Spoiler Territory

A little spoilery if that is even possible with a story that old but as mentioned earlier the film introduces an interesting twist: Snow White’s “Prince” Jonathan (Andrew Burnap) has six other merry men—making it hard to ignore the Robin Hood parallels. Could this secretly be Disney’s live-action Robin Hood film in disguise? I would have wished for some bigger moments. I liked how in the final battle, even tho the battle part was missing, the whole town standing behind Snow. The downfall of the Evil Queen was a visually cool scene but for example the awaking kiss I just expected (once again) a little bit more Once Upon a Time magic.

Final Review

With its fair share of backlash and controversySnow White had an uphill battle before even reaching cinemas. But at the end of the day, it’s a family-friendly film that many will enjoy simply for its classic fairy tale charm.

While Disney has remade several animated classics into live-action films, Cinderella (2015) for me remains the gold standard—one that future adaptations, including Snow White, should take notes from. That said, Snow White (2025) stays very close to the 1937 original, which makes it faithful but not particularly fresh. Unlike Mirror Mirror (2012) or Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), which took creative liberties, this version plays it safe—perhaps too safe. It will be interesting to see the live-action formular in the upcoming Moana adaption especially since the original is not this old and just a few months ago we seen Moana 2.

Was this remake necessary? Probably not. But for what it is, it offers fun and enjoyable cinema experience, even if it doesn’t bring anything groundbreaking to the table.
